Several breaks are located within 30-60 minutes from NIHI® Sumba and are accessible via car or boat.

Hunting the perfect wave is the epitome of surfing life. Although we know that Nihiwatu Beach hosts the greatest wave on the island, we understand that you might be eager to get out, explore and check out other wave sites and you can do so by car or boat.

Rua

If the swell at NIHI® Sumba gets too big, Rua serves a less intimidating day out.

Consisting of a fairly soft wave, with both right and left breaks, this cozy bay is perfect for fresher surfers who are still finding their feet on the board.

Waves there tend to break when the surf at NIHI® Sumba is coming in at over eight feet.

Wanukaka

This right-hand wave can be very powerful when riding the right swell, but it is usually a fun and playful wave for surfing.

Our Boathouse team recommends Wanukaka during March and May and October and January, as a great option for when the winds at NIHI® Sumba are onshore.
