Once a day our team of sumba horses
come galloping down NIHI’s endless stretch
of beach to swim with our guests.

Long before it became a viral sensation on social media, swimming with horses was simply part of daily life in Sumba. For generations, locals have guided their horses into the ocean and rivers to bathe them, cool them down, and strengthen their bond. These moments, set against the island’s raw, untamed beauty, were never staged; they were a living tradition, rooted in care, respect, and harmony with nature. What began as a Sumbanese way of tending to their beloved horses has inspired travelers, photographers, and adventurers everywhere.

At NIHI Sumba, guests are invited to experience this tradition first-hand as a rare chance to step into the rhythm of island life, connecting with the horse as they wade, splash, and play in the saltwater waves.
