Discover the rhythm of rural Sumba on this immersive two-hour journey to NIHI’s own “Rice Island,” a secluded rise set in the heart of emerald paddies.

Your trek begins at NIHI Sumba along the sandy shoreline of Nihiwatu Beach before leading inland across gentle streams, through vibrant green rice fields, and along the edges of traditional villages. As you move deeper into the agricultural heart of the valley, you’ll encounter daily life as farmers tend to their crops, water buffalo graze and schoolchildren offer cheerful waves.

At the end of the hike is Rice Island. A private hillrise verdant hideaway where you’ll be greeted with refreshments. A small pool, a massage and a well-earned picnic all await, which you can enjoy while overlooking sweeping rice paddies.

Overview

Starting from the sandy beach, traversing over delicate streams, crossing through green rice fields, along the outskirts of traditional villages and finally tracking down through the agricultural heart of Sumba. You’ll meet grazing water buffalo, giggling schoolchildren, and hardworking farmers harvesting their crops. This is a magnificent cultural exploration of our neighboring valley.

Following the two-hour hike, you will be greeted with a well-earned picnic overlooking sprawling rice paddies below. Your return to NIHI^® will then be in an open-air safari vehicle so sit back and enjoy the drive through local villages and past schools and health clinics supported by The Sumba Foundation^®.
