LIMITED SURFERS
To maintain a globally unparalleled surfing experience, we limit the wave to fifteen (15) registered surfers per day, so please ensure you get your bookings in to avoid disappointment.
Known as “God’s Left” or “Occy’s Left” (after Australian surfer Mark Occhilupo), the wave is popular for its rugged character.
For even the most experienced surfer, the NIHI® wave presents a challenge due to its sensitivity to nature’s conditions: tides, size, strength, and direction.
However, the reward for catching an epic ride is a 300-meter-long, thrilling journey through sections of rippling swell and heaving barrels.
GOOD TO KNOW
Our jet-ski service fee is part of a safe and sound surf experience at NIHI® Sumba.
Novice and first-time surfers can still get their feet wet with lessons on Nihiwatu beach, depending on the swell. Calmer waters can often be found at nearby Coconut Cove, where surfers can spend half a day with breakfast or lunch and do some light surfing, then be driven back to the resort.
SURF LESSONS
We also offer surf lessons for all ages and tandem surfing to assist little ones with deepening their connection to the ocean.
Experience Sumba’s ancient ways on Nihiwatu’s shoreline right in front of @nihi. On Mini Pasola nights by NIHI Sumba, you get an introduction to Sumba’s rich culture. Young riders from the nearby traditional villages pit their skills against one another by racing along the pristine white sand. A friendly and competitive race that guests can watch and cheer for. Proceeds go to the @sumbafoundation to help fund equipment the kids from the nearby villages may need for schooling.

On the island of Sumba, horses are part of everyday life. Woven through generations in tradition, ceremony, and culture. Symbols of freedom, strength, and spirit.
Each day across the island of Sumba, locals bring their horses to the shoreline, where they wade into the sea to bathe and swim in the saltwater. A ritual as old as the island itself.

Easter festivities spanned the entire weekend, with moments of celebration for guests of all ages. Children gathered for egg painting, arts and crafts, face painting, and set off with baskets in hand for the Easter egg hunt.
A special performance by the choir from English Goes to Kampung filled the afternoon with music, while families came together to enjoy festive Easter dining.
