A Hidden Sanctuary on Sumba’s Wild Coast

Just 15 minutes from NIHI Sumba, Nihioka Spa is a sanctuary immersed in nature. Set across 100 acres of pristine land framed by rice fields, jungle, and ocean, it offers a setting where wellness and wilderness exist in perfect harmony.

With access to two secluded beaches and a freshwater pool overlooking the coastline, Nihioka invites guests to slow down and reconnect to the land, to the elements, and to themselves.

Nihioka is also home to our retired horses, who now live peacefully within this sanctuary. Here, they begin a second chapter through gentle equine wellness experiences. Guests may simply observe their calm presence or participate in guided equine therapy sessions, a deeply grounding and often transformative encounter.

Here is more than a spa, but a place of meaningful connection.

A deeply relaxing massage, light to medium pressure including a specialized stomach massage, reflecting the Sumbanese belief that the stomach is the body’s second brain.

A powerful strong deep tissue massage combined with Thai stretching techniques. Utilises a buffalo horn to alleviate deep-seated tension and muscular stress.

Soothing technique to relieve tension, promote relaxation, and improve circulation, leaving you feeling calm and rejuvenated.

Contrast therapy has been shown to be extremely effective in stimulating micro-circulation, flushing away tissue toxins and acids. Choose only hot stones for a more muscle warming experience or only cold stones to cool and soothe overly sun-kissed skin.

For the ultimate nirvana, enhance your massage experience with two therapists and four hands working in tandem for double the relaxation.

Today was Pasola Gaura in Sumba. Once a year, the island’s ancient traditions come vividly to life as villages gather for Pasola, one of Sumba’s most powerful and sacred rituals. From @nihi, guests have the rare opportunity to witness this extraordinary cultural event.

Riders charge across the field on horseback, hurling wooden spears in a dramatic contest between rival villages. The spectacle is intense, fast paced, and deeply symbolic.

For the Sumbanese, Pasola is far more than competition. It is believed that when blood touches the earth during the battle, it blesses the land and ensures a prosperous rice harvest for the season ahead.

A tradition centuries old, Pasola remains one of the most extraordinary cultural experiences in Indonesia.
