The Island’s Breaks Await

Rote Island is one of Indonesia’s most rewarding yet understated surf destinations with various surf breaks accessible. NIHI Rote is set before one of the island’s most revered waves – Bo’a Barrel. However, hunting the perfect wave is the epitome of surfing life and the more you can catch, the better the experience.

NIHI Rote’s Surf Safari combines local knowledge with comfort by bringing you directly to different swells and iconic waves throughout the day. From short two-hour sessions to half-day or full-day surf safaris, each experience is shaped around weather, safety, and guest preference, preserving the feeling of discovery that has long defined surfing in Rote.

The main waves around the island include: T-Land, Bo’as Barrel, Suckies, Squealers, and Bommie, along with lesser-known and more remote breaks like Do’o and waves on nearby islands such as Dana Island.

Overview

Boa Barrel: Steps from your villa at NIHI Rote, this powerful right-hand wave offers tubing sections, best surfed during mid-to-high tides.

T-Land (Nembrella Beach): A consistent left-hand reef break, rivalling Uluwatu and Mentawai but with fewer crowds.

Suckies (Sakunamo): A hollow, fast right-hander, ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers.

Bommie: A short, sharp right-hand wave near Nemberala, perfect during larger swells.

Squealers: Beginner-friendly with soft breaks at the eastern end of Nemberala Beach.

Do’o: A secluded right-hand wave that offers excellent tubes, and is accessible by boat.
Dana Island: Offers both left and right-hand breaks with minimal crowds, this wave is a half-day boat trip away.
